CREATIVE WRITING FOR
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Course Description
In this one-semester course, students will learn the
structure and requirements of various events in competitive forensics,
including impromptu speaking, public forum debate, and parliamentary debate. We
will also study the basic elements of argumentation and learn how to write case
outlines. Students will work with partners to prepare for and participate
in several debates over the course of the term. Throughout
this process, students will develop skills of organization, audience
adaptation, and critical research. They will also become more comfortable
and confident ‘thinking on their feet’ and speaking in front of an
audience.
Biography
In 2004, Ms. Bruins graduated with honors from the
College of Idaho with a degree in International Political Economies. She
then went on to obtain her Master of Arts in Teaching in 2005, again with high
honors. As part of her research for her Master’s thesis, Ms. Bruins
founded and coached the debate team at Riverstone International School, which
is a prestigious International Baccalaureate-accredited, private school located
in East Boise. Riverstone has a diverse and vibrant international
exchange student population, including many students from East Asia, and these
students comprised the cornerstone of the debate team. In 2007, Ms.
Bruins accepted the position of Social Studies Department Head at American
Creativity Academy of Kuwait. She and her husband stayed on in Kuwait for
the next two years; while there, Ms. Bruins again served as founder and coach
of the debate team, and her students were highly successful at both the national
and international levels of competition. In 2010, Ms. Bruins relocated to
the People’s Republic of China, where she has lived for the last two years.
During that time, Ms. Bruins taught a number of subjects to Chinese high
school students, including Advanced Placement Economics, ESL, and Model United
Nations. However, debate continues to be Ms. Bruins’ real passion, and
she is thrilled now to be back in the Pacific Northwest working to introduce
this activity to a new group of students.
ON PROPERTY PURCHASE
