NWCS 14th Weekly Email Briefings, Spring 2011

Dear NWCS Fellow Members;

Dear All Parents, Teachers and Students;

尊敬的各位家长、各位老师;

亲爱的同学们;

GO TO SCHOOL ON TIME, PLEASE

STRUCTURING CHILDREN'S BELIEFS & PREFERENCES

PARENTS OF TEENAGERS KNOW THAT IF WE HAVE STRUCTURED OUR CHILDREN'S BELIEFS AND PREFERENCES, OUR POWER WILL BE GREATER AND WILL LAST LONGER THAN IF WE HAD RELIED ONLY ON ACTIVE CONTROL OVER THEM. THIS MIGHT BE CONSIDERED THE APPLICATION OF THE “SOFT POWER”THEORY UPON EARLY EDUCATION.

CHINESE FEVER” & SELF-TRAINING

JUNE 10TH OPEN HOUSE FOR NWCS SUMMER CAMP 2011

NWCS 13th Weekly Email Briefings, Spring 2011

Dear NWCS Fellow Members;

Dear All Parents, Teachers and Students;

尊敬的各位家长、各位老师;

亲爱的同学们;

NOT EASY AT ALL TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS, MORE DIFFICULT TO SELF-RECOGNIZE

There are reasons to start this weekly by the above sub-title. First of all, lets express our appreciation to MR. JI, for his Ernest concerns about the transparency, rules & regulations of the Finance; and for his frank opinions upon the future development of our school. As a matter of fact, there is no way for NWCS to have become what it is today if without every single piece of support from each of you, including supervision and criticism. As we have pointed out in the past, Criticism is a negative task that is supposed to have positive payoffs. After all, we, as NWCS fellow members, cherish more the fact toward the meaning of life that we all have enjoyed the good time together and friendship among us throughout the process of educating our kids at NWCS. The society advances not so much by the cumulative materials as by the dialectical confrontation of ideas. Thank you all.

WITH THE WIND THE RAIN SLIPS SECRETLY INTO THE NIGHT; SILENT AND SOFT, IT MOISTENS EVERYTHING

EXTENSIVE READINGS FOR NWCS STUDENTS: CLASSICS OF CHINESE LANGUAGE & LITERATURE IS ABOUT TO BE PUBLISHED. THE COMPILERS OF THE BOOK ARE AS BUSY AS THEY ARE HAPPY, WITH THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS IN MIND, AIMING AT OFFERING NWCS STUDENTS A COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE OF MAJOR LITERARY STYLES: NOVEL, POETRY, SHORT STORY, PROSE, ETC., THROUGH WHICH THEY CAN GRASP THE ESSENCE OF IT. CLASSICS ARE THOSE WRITINGS FOR ALL AND ALL THE TIME. WE WANT TO REALIZE OUR EDUCATION WITH THE IDEAL EFFECT AS THE SUB-TITLE INDICATED. LOOKING FORWARD TO READING IT SOONER!

Mr. YANG, Zhidong, NWCS math teacher of academic excellence and Washington State Math Team master coach, has returned home with triumph from Washington DC. Here is what they got: 6th Place team title and 3rd Place individual. Congratulations!

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO NWCS SUMMER PROGRAM TEACHERS (PART-II)

Qiufang Yi (易秋芳). Autumn Qiufang Yi has been a Chinese teacher at Northwest Chinese School since 2008. Currently she is teaching Chinese 3C class in Bellevue campus. With a bachelor degree in history from Beijing University, she has great experience in engaging students in her classroom and in helping the students to enhance their language learning by ways of understanding different cultural contexts and connections. Being a mother of two young children, Ms. Yi is also very interested in and devoted to the study of children-related psychology and other behavioral sciences.

Shufen Li (李书芬). Teacher Li is a Washington State certified Chinese teacher (K-12) and she taught Chinese at public schools, private schools, colleges, and universities in Colorado and Washington. She also taught Chinese at Chinese heritage school for 5 years in Colorado.

She has been an excellent teacher in NWCS since 2008. She is a highly capable professional teacher who is currently teaching Chinese 2F class at the Bellevue campus. The parents in her class praised her as a definitely outstanding teacher.

Shuhong Fan (樊书虹). Teacher Fan graduated at Huazhong University of Science & Technology in China, and earned her MBA degree in USA. Before she joined NWCS, she taught Chinese, math class in Toronto, Singapore and volunteered as a tutor for math and English Gifted Program Test preparation in Bellevue.

Currently she is the 7th grade leader and teaches Chinese 7C in Bellevue campus. She is a great teacher with the passion and professional knowledge. This is the first year that she will teach math & English reading class in Tiger & Lion in the summer.

Jinny Guan Heiskanen. Jinny is an experienced art instructor and fashion designer. She earned her bachelor degree in fine art in Beijing, and fashion design in The Art Institute of Seattle in 2004. She had been an art teacher at NWCS a few years ago; currently she is teaching art to private students and groups from the beginner to the advanced level in her studio.

Art and life have been inseparable for her; teaching has become the pure and true passion in her life. This summer she will teach art class for the first four weeks.

2011 Summer Program "Open House" will be held on June 10th from 2:00pm to 7:00pm."

WHEN IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO

When asking for something, say "Please."

When receiving something, say “Thank you.”

Do not interrupt grown-ups who are speaking with each other unless there is an emergency. They will notice you and respond when they are finished talking.

If you do need to get somebody's attention right away, the phrase "excuse me" is the most polite way for you to enter the conversation.

When you have any doubt about doing something, ask permission first. It can save you from many hours of grief later.

The world is not interested in what you dislike. Keep negative opinions to yourself, or between you and your friends, and out of earshot of adults.

Do not comment on other people's physical characteristics unless, of course, it's to compliment them, which is always welcome.

When people ask you how you are, tell them and then ask them how they are.

When you have spent time at your friend's house, remember to thank his or her parents for having you over and for the good time you had.

Knock on closed doors -- and wait to see if there's a response -- before entering.

When you make a phone call, introduce yourself first and then ask if you can speak with the person you are calling.

Be appreciative and say "thank you" for any gift you receive. In the age of e-mail, a handwritten thank-you note can have a powerful effect.

Never use foul language in front of adults. Grown-ups already know all those words, and they find them boring and unpleasant.

Don't call people mean names.

Do not make fun of anyone for any reason. Teasing shows others you are weak, and ganging up on someone else is cruel.

Even if a play or an assembly is boring, sit through it quietly and pretend that you are interested. The performers and presenters are doing their best.

If you bump into somebody, immediately say "Excuse me."

Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and don't pick your nose in public.

As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else.

If you come across a parent, a teacher, or a neighbor working on something, ask if you can help. If they say "yes," do so -- you may learn something new.

When an adult asks you for a favor, do it without grumbling and with a smile.

When someone helps you, say "thank you." That person will likely want to help you again. This is especially true with teachers!

Use eating utensils properly. If you are unsure how to do so, ask your parents to teach you or watch what adult do.

Keep a napkin on your lap; use it to wipe your mouth when necessary.

Don't reach for things at the table; ask to have them passed.

WA STATE MATH TEAM COACHED BY MR YANG ZHIDONG HEADING TO WASHINGTON DC

Mr. YANG, Zhidong, NWCS math teacher of academic excellence and Washington State Math Team master coach, is heading the Washington State Math Team to Washington DC to participate in the 2011 MATHCOUNTS National Competition Friday, May 6th, 2011. Among the total of four contestants, two of them are graduates of NWCS Olympic Math classes. They are Kevin Yang and Elizabeth Wei, who have completed the NWCS math class series with excellence. Let's send them our best wishes for their success in the upcoming competition and for their return with triumph.

PEOPLE’S DAILY REPORTING ON NWCS

Soon after the report on the teaching activities and administration of our school by CHINA PRESS, the PEOPLE’S DAILY OVERSEAS EDITION carried a comprehensive dispatch entitled Chinese Language School in USA: the Delightful “Disneyland” for Overseas Chinese Kids on Chinese School in USA in general, and NWCS in particular, with a photo of NWCS classroom attached. As the Principal, I am proud of it on the one hand, being greatly encouraged; I feel the pressure from all directions on the other, being pretty much urged to make NWCS better. It is not a big deal nowadays if one wants to be on a newspaper, but, it is not easy to be carried on the newspaper as PEOPLE’S DAILY due to its authoritativeness and influence. The key is your praiseworthiness.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE & TEACHING EFFECT

Common sense tells us that the teaching effect of high quality depends largely upon the well-kept classroom discipline, which creates an effective, orderly and quiet teaching/learning environment. Therefore, we hereby remind every teacher that more attention should be given to work out ways to draw their attention, to prevent them from distraction, so as to keep the students well-disciplined. Classroom discipline is the reflection of a student’s common behavior in public and his studying habit, which is of vital importance for the formation of the right one, from which one can benefit for the entire life. As educators, we have to carry out this mission throughout our normal teaching activities, especially the fifth graders or younger. Only by this way, can we fulfill the task to keep our students on the right track leading to their bright and successful future.
