  4。新书介绍:BUILDING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN AND TEENS (校长办公处有样书)
This book is intended to help kids learn to manage stress——and thrive (健康/茁壮成长). Children today face a great deal of stress——academic performance, heavy scheduling, high achievement standards, media messages, peer pressure, etc. Without healthier solutions, they often cope by talking back, giving up, or indulging in unhealthy behaviors. In this book, Dr. Ginsburg presents his plan for resilience, which is of great help for kids from 18 months to 18 years to build the 7 crucial Cs——competence, confidence, connection, character, contribution, coping, and control, needed to bounce back from challenges, and much more……

NWCS 9TH WEEKLY EMAIL BRIEFINGS, FALL 2012

Dear All NWCS Fellow Members;
Dear All Parents, Teachers, and Students;
尊敬的各位家长、各位老师;
亲爱的同学们;
大家好!
1.我校学子在西雅图工程师学会主办的数学、自然科学竞赛中成绩斐然——特此祝贺!
CIE/USA- Seattle's MathCamp and ScienceFun events were held on Oct. 28th, 2102. The total number of participants this year was the highest with 177 students who identified themselves as NWCS students being registered. The real number of NWCS students participated in the event could be much higher as some students might have associated themselves with their daily schools. NWCS students did a great job on sweeping most of the places in math. Below are NWCS winners we are proudly to announce:

Third grade:
      Andrew Chen - 1st place
      Joy An - 2nd place

Fourth grade:
            Anthony Xie - 1st place
            Brandon Chen - 2nd place

Sixth grade:
            Henry Zhu - 2nd place

Seventh grade:
            Daniel Li - 1st place
            Daniel He - 2nd place

Eight grade:
            Collin Tang - 1st place
            Edward Yang - 2nd place
            Andrew Xue - 3rd place

Many congratulations to the NWCS students, parents and NWCS community! Please allow me, on behalf on NWCS, to express our gratitude to CIE/USA, especially to Gina Li, for her consistent support, detailed help and wonderful coordination.

2.隆重推介由美国国家地理协会主办的地理知识竞赛活动
INTRODUCING NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE TO NWCS COMMUNITY
The National Geographic Bee (NGB), an educational program of the National Geographic Society, is a nationwide geography competition for U.S. schools with any grades four through eight, designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography.
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the NGB using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge. 2013 NGB Dates:
* School Bees: on 1/5/2013 or 1/12/2013. Both dates are Saturdays.
* State Bees: April 5, 2013
* National Level: May 20–22, 2013
Club and Activity Summary
* Club size: Propose to have less than 20 students. Propose to have only 4-7 grader attend and 5 student each grade. There will be one school winner from all grades.
* Designated Teacher Appointment: NWCS admin designates Hu Bin & Sun Benjing as the organizers and coaches ministering the School Contest.
* Activities and Meetings: There is no requirement for regular meetings by the NGB program. However it will be nice to organize a few activities/meetings of one hour or so (hosted by parents/the designated teacher) to prepare the students/club members and achieve the following:
** Introduce the Bee program to students who signed up.
** Introduce the studying materials.
** Run a trial test.
* Meeting Frequency/time: Saturday afternoon at 1:00PM at Newport High.
To register, please come to Admin Desk. For more details about NGB, please BING/Google NGB in the internet.

3.新书介绍:《THE PARENT APP, UNDERSTANDING FAMILIES IN THE DIGITAL AGE》——数码时代父母对子女上网的焦虑及对策——牛津大学出版社 (校长办公处有样书)
Ninety-five percent of American kids have internet access by age 11; the average number of texts a teenager sends each month is well over 3000.More families report that technology makes life with children more challenging, not less, as parents today struggle with questions previous generations never faced: Is my thirteen-year-old responsible enough for a Facebook page? What will happen if I give my nine-year-old a cell phone? In The Parent App, Lynn Clark provides what families have been solely lacking: smart, sensitive, and insightful analysis into the dilemmas of digital and mobile media in modern life. She identifies various approaches each of which has its own benefits and drawbacks. No matter what the parenting style is, parents are experiencing anxiety about how to manage new technology. By this book, Clark tackles a host of issues, such as family communication, online predators, cyber bullying, sexting, gamer drop-outs, helicopter parenting, technological monitoring, the effectiveness of strict controls, and much more.

4.新书介绍:《THE LEARNING BRAIN——MEMORY & BRAIN DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN》牛津大学出版社 (校长办公处有样书)
Despite highly publicized efforts to improve schools in America; the US is still falling behind, ranking 15th in the world in reading, math and science. Clearly more needs to be done. In the LEARNING BRIAN, Torkel Klingberg urges educators to use the insights of neuroscience to improve the education of our children. The key to improving education lies in understanding how the brain works: that is where learning takes place, after all. The book focuses in particular on “working memory”——our ability to concentrate and to keep relevant information in our head while ignoring distractions. Children with high working memory have better math and reading skills. By this book, Klingberg shows us how to improve our students’ working memory, therefore, enhance the quality of education. It is the education of the future that will really change the world. “Education is a narrow term that merely conjures up images of classrooms. What we’re really interested in, however, is child development, and this includes body and mind, knowledge and health. Mens sana in corpore sano (Latin)——a sound mind in a sound body.”(Page 140)
之所以向大家介绍这两本新书,是因为书中的内容对于我们家长,尤其是对于我们的教师,有着启迪的作用。
