应部分高年级学生和家长的要求，我校在下学期拟聘请蒋方辉老师（MR.FRANK JIANG）为学生们开设《微积分》这门课程。对此，我校教育行政、数学教研室和蒋老师本人初步达成了共识。尤其是蒋老师本人，身为清华的高才生、波音公司的高级工程师、他对数学的情有独钟和丰富的教学经验，这一切已经为课程的开设创造了先决的条件。正所谓万事俱备，只欠东风，作为家长，您的意向如何？请点击下面的链接，接受网上调查。谢谢!

Online Survey of a New Math Advanced Placement Calculus Class (AP CALCULUS)

Based on the inquiry and willingness of parents of higher graders, NWCS is planning to open a new math class - AP Calculus. Mr. Jiang will be the teacher of this class. Frank Jiang, a native of Beijing, a graduate of Qinghua University, a Boeing Senior engineer, a lover of math, is willing to teach this class here at NWCS next semester. The AP Calculus class is designed to help students improve their understandings of basic calculus concepts at level of up to 12th grade. This class trains students AP Calculus test skills with intensive and extensive practices. After completion of this course, students will be able to make progress in the following areas:

1. Logical and critical thinking;

2. Advanced problem-solving skill;

3. AP Calculus test techniques;

4. Calculus application in daily life.

We plan to start this class at the beginning of next semester (Feb. 2012). We will focus on help students prepare for the AP test in the next half a year. Your opinion counts.

2. 免费AP 微积分课程试听 FREE AP CLASS

为了便于学生和家长做出判断，本周六（12/04/2011）我们将请蒋老师和大家面对面，试讲试听微积分课程，并且针对大家共同关心的问题一一解答。欢迎有兴趣的师生家长踊跃参加。时间：十二点至一点半，教室：1201。

A FREE TRIAL AP CALCULUS CLASS IS ASSIGNED AT CLASSROOM 1201 FROM 12 TO 1:30PM. DR. FRANK JIANG WILL DELIVER AN INTRODUCTORY LECTURE ON AP CALCULUS, FACE TO FACE WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS, ANSWERING QUESTIONS. ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN ARE WELCOME. NWCS ADMIN THINKS THAT THE BEST TIME DURATION IS 90 MINUTES, WITH INSTRUCTOR, STUDENTS, FACILITY MANAGEMENT, EFFICIENCY AND BEST RESULT BEING ALL CONSIDERED.

5．多读书读好书蔚然成风于我西北中文

READING BECOMING A GENERAL TREND HERE AT NWCS

在生活节奏越来越快的今天，宝贵的空闲时间如何安排？在与家长师生的交谈中我们发现，多读书，读好书，已经成为我们西北中文这个大家庭业余生活的重要内容。从形式上看：有手捧书本边读边划读的、有电脑上网我行我素读的、有 ipad 下载一目十行读的；从主题上看：除了传统的中外文学、经济管理类书籍外，畅销、应景类书籍（如《乔布斯传》）以及哲学、历史、政治类经典书籍和八卦小说无所不包。大家见面寒暄之后，接下来往往聊的就是近来所读的书，并郑重其事地相互推荐，一脸的认真让人除了赶快去读别无选择。主校大厅内、楼梯上、楼道旁的读书场景就是我校课外读书蔚然成风的一个缩影。正是：生活，因阅读而大好！

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!

Thanksgiving as a holiday, I believe, is one of our favorite here in America. It is a wonderful time to express our heartfelt thanks to all of our loved ones. Please allow me, on behalf of Admin, Board, and PTA, to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to all of you without whose supports, NWCS would not have been as it is today.

我校春晚文艺演出的报名已圆满结束。现已按计划进入下一阶段——AUDITION。组委会会按照程序分期、分时段地组织预审，请大家留意筹委会的通知。我们的原则是：既要顾及到大家的积极性，又要尽可能地使节目多样化，还要保证有一定的艺术水平。相信大家也是这样期待的。谢谢各位家长、老师和广大同学的积极参与。

The registration to perform at NWCS Chinese New Year (CNY) Gala is over. The organizing committee has shifted its focus to the next step——audition. Please pay attention to the email notices from CNY and attend the audition on time. The guidelines for audition are to encourage participation on the one hand, to make sure the diversities of the programs on the other, and the artistic & creative elements as well. I am sure this is what you all expect for. Thank you!

各位家长、各位老师；

亲爱的同学们；

大家好！

相信大家都度过了一个轻松愉快的周末，尤其是五年级以下的小同学们，因为他们不用为准备下周六（11/19/2011）《中华文化知识竞赛》和紧接着的《数学竞赛》而用功、复习。趁着11/12/11这个周六无课，让学生们睡个懒觉，同时，我们也以身作则地偷了个懒。因此，也没有发本周的WEEKLY，很抱歉，让期待的家长们失望了。但是，我们对家长们老师们的那份尊敬，对学生们的那份关爱和对西北的那份责任是有增无减的。

We are sure all of you have had a wonderful NO-SCHOOL weekend, especially those of fifth graders and under, for they have no pressure at all for the coming AMC8 & CHINESE CULTURE CONREST, which all others of 6^th to 12^th have to take this opportunity to review. Working for an educational institution, one of the privileges is the occasional breaks in between school days. While encouraging our kids to sleep in and relax with more play, we skipped the WEEKLY for the week. We are sorry to make those who expect disappointed. Yet, what we do not make you so is our respect to all NWCS fellow members, our love to all our students and the responsibility to our school.

2. AMC8西北中文学校数学竞赛 NWCS AMC 8

Time 12:00-1:00pm

Classroom: 2104, 2109 & 2110.

我校一年一度的 AMC8 也将在本周六（11/19/2011）举行，相信会有不少同学在同一天内会有两场考试。辛苦啦。考试已经成为除蕞茸小国芬兰之外大多数国家现代基础教育的有机组成部分，尽管我们的理念是：与其看重考试分数，我们更重视基本功。考试仅是巩固知识的手段之一。

As an annual event, NWCS is going to host AMC 8 on Nov.19, 2011, between 12:00-1:00pm at NHS main campus. We are sure there are many students who will have two exams at the same date, one after another. Although our doctrine is ability-oriented, not exam-oriented, we have to commit that testing/examination has become part of the basic education of our modern times, with only one nation as an exception-Finland. There are no mandatory tests or exams; except for the nationwide National Matriculation Examination, in mother tongue, foreign language, mathematics and social/natural sciences, at the end of the upper-secondary school (from 17~19 of age). Teachers make their own assessment tests, not quoting numeric grades, but using descriptive feedback, no longer comparing students with one another. This helped teachers and students focusing on learning in a fear-free environment, in which creativity and risk-taking are encouraged. Teachers have more real freedom in time planning when they do not need have to focus on annual tests or exams. For details, please Google: What makes education in Finland that good?

1．下周六无课 NO SCHOOL ON 11/12/2011

下周六，即十一月十二日, 因NHS ANNUAL“SKI SWAP”EVENT，为了避免人多车多给大家带来的停车难等诸多不便，我校特安排休息。有外出计划的家庭可早做安排；无特殊安排的，那就让孩子们放松放松，睡个懒觉。

TO AVOID POSSIBLE CONFLICTS SUCH AS PARKING, TRAFFIC, ETC., NWCS HAS NO SCHOOL NEXT SATURDAY (NOVEMBER 12^th, 2011) DUE TO NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL SKI SWAP EVENT. YOU CAN PLAN AHEAD MAKING FULL USE OF THE RARE TWO-WHOLE-DAY WEEKENDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEMESTER, OR SIMPLY LET THE KIDS RELAX AND SLEEP IN. THANKS.

2. 年度中文活动会议 BRIEF MEETING ON ANNUAL ACTIVITIES OF ALL CHINESE CLASSES

时间过得好快啊！忙忙碌碌之中，眼看着一学期已经过半，本周六(11/05)冷静副校长将代表学校教学行政召集各中文班年级组长开个短会，主要是在了解交流各年级的教学情况的基础上商量本学年全校中文活动的安排、具体的时间、内容、形式等等。开会时间：11:10AM。地点：1112 教室。请届时参加。欢迎家长鉴言。

TIME FLIES! THIS SATURDAY AT 11:10AM, CLASSROOM 1112, ON BEHALF ON ADMIN, DEPUTY PRINCIPAL LENG JING IS TO HOLD A MEETING IN BRIEF WITH CLASS-LEADS OF ALL CHINESE LANGUAGE CLASSES TO DISCUSS AND PLAN AHEAD THE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS BASIC KNOWLEDGE CONTEST, STORY TELLING, AND POETRY RECITATION.PLEASE ATTEND IT ON TIME. 3．期中考试 MID-TERM EXAMS

大部分班级的期中考试安排在本周随堂进行，望家长按时把孩子送到学校。无论是数学，还是语文，亦或是其它艺术学科，与其看重考试分数，我们更重视基本功。考试仅是巩固知识的手段之一。应试教育是我们所尽力避免的。

MID-TERM EXAMS TAKE PLACE THIS SATURDAY. PARENTS: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SEND YOUR KIDS INTO THEIR CLASSROOMS IN TIME. EXAMINATIONS ARE JUST MEANS TO TEST AND REINFORCE THE KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE LEARNED. EXAMINATION-ORIENTED EDUCATION IS THE ONE WE ARE TRYING TO AVIOD. OUR GOAL IS RATHER TO PREPARE ALL OUR STUDENTS TO BECOME HEALTHY AND PRODUCTIVE, LEADING US INTO THE BETTER FUTURE. FOR THEM TO THRIVE LONG TERM, WE AS EDUCATORS NEED TO CONSIDER THEIR HAPPINESS AND ACHIEVEMENT, AS WELL AS THE SKILLS THEY WILL NEED TO NAVIGATE AN INCRERASINGLY COMPLEX WORLD TOMORROW. WE WANT THEM TO BE ABLE TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY AND VIEW CHALLENGES AS OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND INNOVATION. WE NEED THEM TO BE RESILIENT.
