西北中文学校中文成人初级班

NWCS 2011-2012 Adult Beginning Chinese Class

西北中文学校中文成人初级班

Time: 9:00am – 11:00am

Instructor: Mingang Li

This class will emphasize on conversational Chinese for students with little or no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. We will use the text book "New Practical Chinese Reader". In conjunction with this text book, we will study real life Chinese words and sentences that are easy to understand, with correct grammar, and interpret them with proper cultural and situational context. We will learn the basic pronunciation system (pinyin), study simple decomposition of characters, and learn to use the English-Chinese dictionary. We will strive to make this class fun, informative, and culturally relevant. We will adjust the pace of the class by student progress. By the end of the course, we aim for the student to be able to look up characters, correctly come up with their pronunciations, understand their meanings, and make simple (and complex) sentences. If you are interested in learning the Chinese language for the Chinese culture, travel, business, making friends, or just for fun, come join us. Prior experience with the Chinese language is helpful but not required.

About the instructor: The instructor of this class finished primary and secondary education in China, and completed undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of California. He is fully bilingual, and despite a professional life in the sciences, has a keen interest in the Chinese language and culture. For the past 5 years at Northwest Chinese School, he has been a popular teacher for the Adult English class, where many participants had been accomplished academics and professionals from China.
